Privacy policy

We handle personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, where it lives, and what your rights are.

What we collect

If you subscribe to the newsletter:

• Your email address
• Your sector preference (NDIS, aged care, or both)
• Consent records: when you subscribed, when you confirmed your subscription, and when you unsubscribed (if you do)
• Email delivery records held by our email provider, which include whether an email was delivered and may include whether it was opened or a link was clicked

If you create a website account:

• Your email address and login credentials (passwords are stored in hashed form by our authentication provider — we never see or store your password in plain text)
• Your display preferences (such as theme, hidden sources, and preferred categories)
• Your bookmarks
• Your reading activity on the site (which articles you have opened, and when)

What we don’t collect: We don’t collect payment information (Stellar News is free). We don’t use advertising trackers or marketing cookies. The website uses only the essential cookies needed to keep you signed in to your account. We don’t buy, sell, or trade personal information.

Why we collect it

We use your information to:

• Deliver the weekly newsletter you signed up for, filtered to your sector preference
• Manage your consent, including honouring unsubscribe requests promptly, as required by the Spam Act 2003 (Cth)
• Operate your website account and remember your preferences, bookmarks, and reading history
• Understand, in aggregate, how the newsletter and website are used so we can improve them
• Meet our legal obligations

We only use your information for the purposes above. We will never use your email address for anything other than Stellar News.

Where your information is stored

• Our database is hosted with Supabase in Sydney, Australia. This is the primary store for all subscriber and account information.
• Email delivery is handled by Resend, a United States–based email service provider. Your email address and email delivery records are processed and stored by Resend in the United States.
• The website is hosted on Vercel, a United States–based hosting provider. Website requests are processed on Vercel’s infrastructure.

Where information is handled overseas (Resend and Vercel), it is disclosed only to the extent necessary to deliver the service, to providers with their own published privacy and security commitments.

AI and your personal information

Stellar News uses artificial intelligence to summarise news articles. The AI service processes article text only — no subscriber or account information is ever sent to any AI service.

How long we keep it

• Subscriber and account information is kept while your subscription or account is active.
• If you unsubscribe, we retain your email address and consent history as a suppression record. This ensures we never email you again and is consistent with our record-keeping obligations under the Spam Act 2003. Consent records are not deleted.
• If you ask us to delete your account or other information, we will delete everything except the minimal consent and suppression records described above.

Your rights

You can ask us at any time to:

• Access the personal information we hold about you
• Correct information that is inaccurate or out of date
• Delete your information (subject to the consent-record retention described above)
• Unsubscribe — every newsletter includes a functional unsubscribe link, and unsubscribe requests are honoured promptly

Complaints

If you have a concern about how we’ve handled your personal information, please contact us first at hello@stellar.news and we will do our best to resolve it. If you’re not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. The current version will always be published at stellar.news, with its effective date. If we make a material change to how we handle personal information, we will tell subscribers by email.
